Hari OM!

It is time for Navaratri Celebrations at Chinmaya Haridwar!
PLEASE NOTE: Due to space limitations, this event is exclusively reserved for our annual sponsors.

“Nava-ratri” literally means “nine nights.” Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme goddess. In the first three days, the Mother is invoked as a powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices, and defects. For the next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power to bestow on her devotees inexhaustible wealth. The final set of three days is spent worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order to have all-around success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother; hence, the worship for nine nights.

The festival is celebrated in different ways in different parts of India. In Delhi, numerous events around Ramlila mark the celebrations, while in West Bengal, Durga Puja captures the essence of the festival. In Gujarat, it is celebrated by performing the Garba dance while in South India, celebrations take the form of Bommai Golu or Navratri Golu – the artistic display of dolls. We include all these in our festivities at Chinmaya Haridwar!

Chinmaya Mission Portland will be celebrating Navaratri on Saturday, October 12, 2024.  After Puja, we will be doing child-friendly Dandiya Raas followed by dinner.

Karwa Chauth at Haridwar 10/19/2024 at 3:30 PM

    Date & Time: Oct 19, 2024 & 3:30 PM PT
Location: Chinmaya Haridwar” 3551 NE John Olsen Ave
Free & Open to all, signup required to attend

    Hari OM!

The festival is celebrated in the month of ‘Kartik’, just after the full moon. ‘Karwa’ means small earthen pot and ‘Chauth’ stands for the fourth day of the dark fortnight (Krishna-Paksha). On this occasion, married women keep fast for their husbands’ long life and prosperity.

Karwa Chauth is not just a mere festival. The underlying significance of Karwa Chauth can make you understand its value of it. Traditionally, the festival is celebrated by several women in one place, all dressed up in glorious saris and ornaments. They put mehndi on their palms and worship the moon together. A ‘pujarin’ or a lead woman conducts the whole function. After seeing the moon, they break their fast by taking water and food from their husbands.

For Puja at Chinmaya Haridwar, please bring the following:

    1. Puja Thali/plate & Lota
    2. Some dry fruits in a Ziploc
    3. Tlight for lighting lamp. Lamps must NOT be placed directly on our carpet.
    4. Place something like cash, cloth, etc. for gifts usually given to mother-in-law or any elders.
    5. Cloth to cover the plate

You can wear any traditional Indian dress with bangles and jewelry etc. If this is your first Karwa Chauth, we suggest you wear something bright.

Before sitting down for puja, fill up a puja Lota with water and leave it in your puja place. After the moonrise, you will use this water and lamp for doing the puja before eating dinner. We can give you more guidance when you come for puja.

Please note that we have a talk by Brahmacharini Stuti Chaitanya right after, so we will end Karwachauth program at 5:00PM sharp
